چکیده

In current WLAN system that is designed for best-effort communications, there is not any quality of service (QoS) differentiation support. In this paper, we propose a fully distributed medium access control (MAC) adaptation method for service differentiation. It is implemented by dynamically updating the MAC layer parameters (such as contention window) to adapt to the network conditions in a class-based fashion. In this sense, the QoS classes are differentiated and the system performance is significantly improved in terms of delay, packet loss and throughput while ensuring fairness and stability. The key idea of our scheme is the introduction of a mapping function and a target contention window. It is demonstrated that our proposed adaptive MAC can outperform both the basic 802.11 MAC and the fixed differentiation scheme with very low complexity.

Enhanced QoS by Service Differentiation in MAC-Layer for WLAN

IEEE 802.11 wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) have become more and more popular due to easy to deployment and lower cost. It can only provide a best effort service and do not have quality of service (QoS) support for real time (RT) traffic. The IEEE Task Group has been proposed a new standard IEEE 802.11e[1] to address this MAC-layer QoS issue of WLAN. In this paper we proposed a new service d...

Performance Comparison of Dual Queue and EDCA for VoIP over IEEE 802.11 WLAN

The popular IEEE 802.11 WLAN today does not provide any quality-of-service (QoS) because of its contention-based channel access nature of the medium access control (MAC). Therefore, we proposed a simple software upgradebased solution, called a dual queue scheme, to provide QoS to real-time services such as Voiceover-IP (VoIP) in our previous work. The dual queue scheme operates on top of the le...

WLAN 802.11e evaluation performance using OPNET

The low cost and easy deployment of Wireless LAN 802.11 standard means it becomes more and more popular, but it has a vital drawback with regard to Quality of Service (QoS). QoS defines the ability of network to introduce consistent services for data transmission, and is evaluated in terms of specific parameters such as jitter, delay, and packet loss. These parameters describe data traffic qual...

A Simple Adaptive p-persistent MAC Scheme for Service Differentiation and Maximum Channel Utilization

In this paper, we propose an adaptive p-persistent MAC scheme, named QDA-MAC (QoS differentiation based adaptive MAC scheme), for WLAN to maximize the channel utilization and provide the service differentiation among different traffic stations. Specifically, different from the previous works, the proposed scheme does not need to estimate the number of active stations for each priority class and...
